In June 2017, TAG Analyst Alex Renner met with several TAG Asian American and Pacific Islander scholarship recipients of Running Start’s Young Women’s Political Leadership Program (“YWPL”) at the TAG offices in Washington, D.C.
At an in-office reception during their week-long program, Alex met with a dozen high school-aged young women interested in careers in politics and public policy where he helped lead them through a discussion touching on a variety of topics including college applications, working in international policy, and career goals. With an emphasis on growing an underrepresented cohort amongst rising politicians, YWPL participants were particularly interested in how they could best bring their unique experiences and interests to the table in shaping future policy discussions and encouraging more of their peers to get involved.
After the discussion and Q&A, Alex joined the young women in an informal networking session where everyone enjoyed ice cream floats and prepared for another long day of break-out sessions, meetings with Congressional Representatives, and the media training that has become an essential part of highly-engaged politicians and policy makers around the world.
The TAG Foundation looks forward to continuing to support women’s empowerment and equality programs, such as Running Start, from the Himalayas through the Mekong to the Potomac.
