Sam Gerstle

Associate

Sam is an Associate at The Asia Group, where he is principally focusing on supporting the firm’s defense portfolio. In this capacity, Sam draws on his array of government and policy research experience to deliver timely analyses of political, security, and macroeconomic trends relevant to client equites. His areas of expertise include U.S. foreign policy, Japan’s international relations, regional security dynamics, and the geopolitics of energy.

Prior to joining The Asia Group, Sam worked on the Japan team at the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense. During this time, he supported regional defense initiatives aimed at strengthening U.S. alliance coordination, prepared briefing materials and speeches for senior U.S. officials, and met regularly with Japanese and Korean government counterparts. Sam previously worked at the Office of Energy and Environmental Industries within the International Trade Administration at the U.S. Department of Commerce. In this role, he developed analyses on the market for U.S. liquefied natural gas in major Asian markets; created a training program on the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors for the U.S. Commercial Service’s energy team; and supported the production of annual reports assessing the top international markets for U.S. firms working in the energy sector. Prior to his work at the Department of Commerce, Sam was a Research Associate with the Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, where he was the lead researcher for a book project on the history of U.S. strategy in the Asia-Pacific.

Sam graduated with distinction from the Graduate School of Foreign Service (MSFS). While at Georgetown, Sam was a recipient of a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship for the advanced study of Japanese and was Editor in Chief of the Georgetown Journal of Asian Affairs. He received his undergraduate degree from Georgetown University, completing a dual degree in Japanese and History. Sam has studied and lived in Nagoya, Japan, and is proficient in Japanese.
